Christmas in July

As if they don’t have enough to worry about already, traditional retailers face a new online challenge tomorrow, weeks before the traditional start of the Back-to-School season that commences in the Southernmost U.S. this month. Amazon’s Third Annual “Prime Day” actually begins at 9pm Eastern/6 pm Pacific tonight promising new deals every five minutes and special offers throughout. Retail
Split week for the segment during the holiday week with five up, nine down and the aggregate essentially flat. Foot Locker, which saw a nearly 3 percent bump, sees the Second Circuit Court of Appeals uphold a $180 million verdict for its employees who argued the retailer made misleading statements about changes to their pension plan. Shoe Carnival, upgraded to “hold” from “strong sell” by Zacks Investment Research, raised its quarterly dividend 7 percent late last month. Dick’s, which along with Foot Locker isn’t expected to be hurt by Nike’s decision to sell Amazon, had a couple of flash sales before the 4th of July holiday. Sportsman’s Warehouse is rated “outperform” by Credit Suisse, which says the outdoor specialist will see its sales trend stabilize and improved margins following slower growth for competitors and Gander store exits. Meanwhile, with Mississippi slated to be among the first states headed back-to-school at month’s end, one wonders if Genesco’s Journeys will have a stronger, more-in-demand assortment in place for its B-T-S customers.
Brands
Segment remained slightly up for the period despite 10 decliners and only four gainers. Nike, coming off its Amazon announcement, and Adidas led the group. Raymond James has initiated The Swoosh at “outperform” and upgraded Adidas to “market perform.” The Three Stripes, also upgraded by HSBC, unveiled their new home kit for Manchester United soccer and introduced the (James) Harden BTE shoe for Asian markets only initially. Under Armour, meanwhile, saw some share price recovery after a 7 percent drop following an analyst’s comments that online search interest for the brand has plummeted since September 2016. Susquehanna raised its target price on UA to $17 after the company announced the signing of rapper and producer A$AP Rocky, Kendall Jenner’s main squeeze, who is expected to help with the brand’s lifestyle design efforts. Skechers, meanwhile, is, according to Law360, ordered to submit information about its sales and various types of property in the state of Oregon in a federal patent infringement case brought by Nike.
